Taking the Test
There are two ways to take the test; in person by visiting one of our many agents located across the country or by challenging the exam online after completing the mandatory minimum 3 hour online study course.
In Person
The easiest way to take the test is visit one of our agents where you can challenge the 50 question written test, the advantages of doing this are:
- There is no mandatory study time – if you are an experienced boater you can just go in and write the test.
- If you want to brush up on your boating knowledge you can purchase a study guide to take home and study at your own pace where you want, when you want without having to have access to a computer plus you get a useful reference tool to keep on the boat.
- Once you've successfully completed the boating exam, a plastic (credit-card-style) boating licence will be mailed to you. Our agent will provide you with an interim boater “card” immediately after successfully passing the exam.

Online
If you are unable to visit one of our agents to take the test in person you can take the test online. Following changes to the online exam testing regulations you no longer have to have a supervisor but there is a mandatory online course that you must take first before you can challenge the online exam.
- The mandatory online course consists of 5 modules, each on which you must pass successfully before proceeding to the next one.
- The minimum time required to complete the course is 3 hours so even if you are an experienced boater and quickly pass each module you will have to wait the allotted time before being allowed to proceed to the next one.
- Once you have completed all the modules you can then challenge the online test.
- Once you've successfully completed the boating exam you can print a temporary boater licence and a plastic (credit-card-style) boating licence will be mailed to you.
